Amster, Amster, dam, dam, dam

We're made it to Amsterdam (always think of the song from Camp Huckins when I hear the name of this city). The flight over was uneventful and completely comfortable - got to love business class in the new airbus 330s. Kurt and I had a good time competing in the trivia game against each other - surprise, surprise right?! Neither of us really slept but we tried anyway. Got to Amsterdam at about 11am and by 12 we were on a train into the city. We spent 3 hours walking around...tried to go to the Anne Frank house but the line was soooo long - wrapped around the corner - so we passed. Guess that's what happens on a Saturday afternoon - everyone and their brother is out and about. We figured the Van Gogh and Rembrandt museums would be just as bad so we wandered off to find lunch. Had lunch at a little place called Ludens - have to love paying 20 euros for soup, sandwich, fries and a couple of cokes. We walked around a bit more - went through part of the Amsterdam Historical Museum and then through the infamous 'red light district'. Interesting place - and interesting ladies in windows with the smell of ganja was everywhere - and no, we did not try any magic brownies etc. Had to see it all since our next layovers here won't be as long and we'll have munchkin with us too. On the short train ride back to the airport from the city I fell asleep on Kurt's shoulder - beat! Only 40 more minutes and we're back on a plane - this time to Kaz! Side note - have forgotten the smell of smoke in airports - now I remember (ugh)- at least the planes are brand new and of course no smoking. Also - people must think we're Dutch as everyone starts every conversation with us in Dutch - unlike Italy when they knew we were American a mile away.
